On a routine putback, Marble Falls High School senior center Lexie Edwards added her name to an exclusive group in the program’s record book.
Edwards dropped in 13 points during the 54-25 loss to San Antonio Pieper (16-2) Dec. 8, none bigger than rebounding her own miss for the two points that added her to the list of players who scored at least 1,000 points wearing a Lady Mustangs uniform.
“Super proud of Lexie,” head coach John Berkman said. “It’s a huge compliment to score 1,000 points and have 500 rebounds. Every program is full of superstars as our program has been.”
While the Lady Mustangs have had 1,000-point scorers in the past that included Kelly Clark, Farren Fox, Morgan Shell, Sarah Stripling, Mia Berkman and Aubree Adams, not all of them had 500 rebounds in a career.
Edwards joins Adams and Berkman with her name in both categories.
Edwards was able to get to 1,000 points in 106 games as a four-year letterman.
“That number stands out even more,” Berkman said. “We’re really proud of her for that for sure.”
What makes the center’s milestone remarkable is the number of defenders who are tasked with containing her. Rarely does she go one-on-one with a defender. Typically she has two or three and sometimes four players who are crowding the lane with the intent of not allowing her to have a clean look at the hoop. As an underclassmen, Edwards faced defenses in District 25-5A.
“You feel like they’re pretty special,” the coach said. “She means a ton to our program. She’s somebody who attracts a lot of attention. We’re super excited and proud of her.”
Against Pieper Marble Falls faced an 11-6 deficit after the first quarter. Pieper relied on a full-court man defense that dropped into a half-court trap and used its speed and quickness to step into passing lanes for steals and turnovers.
Junior forward Kylie Roberts added two free throws and Edwards’ made field goal trimmed the deficit to 11-10 with 6 minutes and 17 seconds left in the half.
Pieper responded with a 10-0 run that ended when sophomore center Leslie Reynosa rebounded her own miss for a bucket. But the Warriors scored a 3-pointer and a 3-point play in the final 43 seconds to build a 27-12 advantage at the half.
Pieper continued the same strategy in the second half with one exception. The Warriors, who rarely missed in the second period, weren’t able to sustain that in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs threw the ball to the high and low posts as Pieper mixed up its defenses. But the Warriors didn’t allow open and easy looks at the basket.
By the end of the contest, the Warriors made 20 field goals with two coming from behind the 3-point line and were 12 of 14 from the free throw line. Marble Falls made nine 2-point field goals and were 7 of 16 from the free throw line.
The Lady Mustangs welcome the Texas Lions at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12. It is a varsity-only match-up.
